We decided today to leave son and daughter-in-law to trek across from Troutbeck to Ambleside with the dog, while hubby, myself and grandson drove to check out the local toy shop.
We arrived at the car park to find a discreet but noticeable police presence which turned out to be security in advance of a visit by Price Charles to Ambleside Mountain Rescue Centre adjacent.
Out of curiosity we thought we'd join the waiting group of observers and soon a sleek limousine swept in. It was a beautiful day and as is his wont, the Prince headed for the knot of keen onlookers. We were in the front with our grandson sporting his broken arm in a plaster cast. Quite forgetting the protocol of formal address, Granny (who clearly considers herself Royalty), announced as the Prince of Wales approached us, 'Charles, this is Charles.'
Intrigued by the plaster cast, the Prince asked young Charlie if he had fallen off his bike but Charlie told him it had happened by tumbling off the play equipment at school.
'Does it still hurt?' HRH wondered.
'Yes!' And then with a sympathetic smile, the Prince passed on, shaking hands with Hubby as he went.
An insignificant moment in the bustle of the day for most people but a charming and warm moment for young Charles to cherish. After all, it's not every day that one gets to chat to the future King of England!
P.S. Hubby said the Prince's hands were not soft as expected. Proof maybe of his genuine practical approach to anything gardening or farm related I wonder?
